Story of David and his son Absalom
King David is treated unfairly by his son Absalom.  Absalom had no respect for his father, a person in authority.  Absalom's plan was to become king and overtake the throne from his father.  Even though King David was treated poorly he honored God and fled with his people to Jerusalem.

Virtue Word of the Week: RESPECT
How can we respect God and others even when we are treated unfairly?

Memory Work: 1 Peter 2:20b-21
"But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. 21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps."

Math: Lessons 16-19

News and Notes for September 25th-29th

Christian Character Formation: How can God’s mercy help you do what is right even when you’ve done something really wrong?

Our focus word this week is Justice: God's power to help us do what is right according to his word.

Memory Work
Psalm 51:10-12
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right[a] spirit within me.
11 Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.

Science: We will be starting part 2 of our soil investigation.  Our focus question is: "What causes big rocks to break down into smaller pieces?"  We will be doing more experiments and adding to our notebooks in class.  It is very important for your child to be keeping their notebooks up to date in class and participating in our experiments and discussions.

Social Studies: We will spend about 1 more week doing mostly science in my classroom and then switch back to a Social Studies topic.  Our Social Studies content for now is reviewing things on our map skills and starting some basic Missouri History.

Extra Notes: 9/11-9/15

Social Studies
We have finished up chapter 1 and your kids all did well on their tests.  They will be coming home this Friday.  We will take a break from doing Social Studies every morning and will be moving this class to the afternoon for a few weeks.  We will be doing some Missouri History in between each chapter of our Social Studies book.

Science
We have begun our first investigation in Science that revolves around soil.  We are looking at different types of soil and investigating what causes each type to form.  We will be doing Science every day in the mornings for the next couple of weeks.

Reading Notebooks
During our reading block each day, the kids record notes, write responses, and log their reading in their Reader's Notebooks.  This notebook will not go home most of the time as it is intended for use in class.  The expectation is that your kids are following along in class and keeping their notebooks up to date.  We have set up a rotation of days for your kids to have their notebooks checked each week.  The list is posted in each classroom and checklists are handed out each week so that they can be prepared to turn in their notebooks on their assigned day.  If they are absent, they will need to check with a teacher or classmate to get the information they missed in class.

Book Orders
Just a reminder that book orders are due September 27th.  You can do this online at https://clubs.scholastic.com/  or by turning in the paper order form.

Christian Character Formation for September 5th-8th

For our Christian Character Formation this week we will study the story of young David facing Goliath (1 Samuel 17:25-50). We will also learn how we can overcome a giant in our life.  We focus on the virtue of courage, which is “God’s power for you to overcome fear.”  We will explore how a young shepherd boy, no older than age 13, who had just secretly been anointed to become Israel’s new king (since Saul who we talked about last week, has now rejected God’s ways and God has promised to replace him on the throne). David faces the towering giant knowing that the fate of Israel is on the line, yet he loudly proclaims that God will prevail.  This week we explore how we can have courage and faith like David, able to face our giants with confidence.

We encourage you to have conversations regarding David’s courage and faith, God’s protection, and how we can live with this same courage and confidence in our daily lives.

Blessings on your week!

Mrs. Glackin

Memory Work 9-8-17

John 16:33
"I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace.  In the world you will have tribulation.  But take heart; I have overcame the world."

1 Samuel 17:47

All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.
