4th Grade News and Notes for September 4th - 7th

Curriculum night was a success! Thank you to all the parents who were able to make it out for the evening.  If you were not able to join us, please make sure to check your child's take home papers this week for a brochure that reviews what we will cover this year in 4th grade.  Also, be sure to check your student's planner and the blog for information about what we are doing in class.

Scholastic Book Order Forms:  We would like to send home monthly catalogs for you to purchase books from Scholastic.  Mrs. Glackin's class is in need of a parent volunteer that can collate these book orders.  Please email Mrs. Headrick (CHeadrick@ccls-stlous.org) if you are willing to help out.

Character Formation Story: Noah Builds the Ark
Word of the Week: Diligence - God's power for you to focus on your work.

Please work with your child on memorizing the Character Formation definition for diligence, the memory verse and discussing the focus question.
Focus Question: How I diligently complete everything just as God commands me?

Colossians 3:23-24 "Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that form the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ."

Art: Students are creating a piece of art by "taking a line for a walk" with oil pastels.  Oil pastels are provided by the school.  Students received their oil pastels in class.  Please help your child take care of these, we will be using them all year long.

Reading: This week students created lists for occasions when we "Abandon Books". There are circumstances that happen when we do not want to finish a book we have started.  That is okay because there are so many books to choose from they will have the opportunity to start reading a different book.  They also spent time setting up their reading notebooks with sections that we will be using throughout the year.
Students are working on building their reading stamina.  They should bring one or more books from home to read during the school day.  We will be doing benchmark testing to see how they are reading.  After the testing we will better know what areas to support them in reading comprehension and fluency.

Math: Students are encouraged to practice math facts at home, especially multiplication.  They should be able to say their multiplication facts as quickly as possible from memory.  Please work on these throughout the year.  Students are working on the first few lessons this week.  Their homework sheet is scaffold to help them understand the work goes in the work boxes and the answers are in the answer box.  I will have the answer boxes filled out for our first several lessons so they can focus on the work box and have a clear understanding of what it means to show work.

Social Studies: Students concluded their unit about social scientists this week.  The main focus will be science now that we have superworms in the classroom to observe.

Science: Students completed their first observations of the superworms.  They will have more observations and investigations this week with the worms.  Many of the superworms were given names by the students, ask your student to see if they name their superworm. :)  We are observing superworms through their life cycle. Students will be varying the superworm's living conditions to learn how they respond to habitat changes.
Our first field trip is coming up on Wednesday, October 10th.  Parents are needed to form small groups of students to explore and learn about the pioneer days of Missouri's history.  Please email Mrs. Endorf if you are able to join us for the day.

4th Grade News and Notes for August 27th-31st

Wow! What another amazing week we have had in 4th grade.  Students are learning routines and procedures wonderfully.  They learned about password protection and creating a strong password for their Chromebook accounts.  They should be able to sign in at home.  This might be a good time to practice before they need to use it for an assignment. They should tell you the password they created, keep it somewhere safe.

Scholastic Book Order Forms:  We would like to send home monthly catalogs for you to purchase books from Scholastic.  Both 4th grade classes are in search of a parent volunteer that could collate the forms for us.  Please email your child's teacher if you are willing to help.
