4th Grade News and Notes for October 29th-November 2nd

We were sad to say goodbye to Mrs. Headrick this past week but are thrilled to welcome back Mrs. Glackin.  Please remember these next few weeks will be a time of adjusting for Mrs. Glackin and the students has they find their new flow with Mrs. Glackin.
Thank you for taking time out of your day to discuss your student's 1st quarter progress.  We look forward to continuing that growth in the second quarter.
Also, thank you for any books that were purchased at the Scholastic Book Fair last week!

Scholastic Book Order Forms went home with your child, if you do not have an order form you are welcome to shop the catalogs online.  Please place all orders online.  There is a link on the side of this blog.
Scholastic Book Order Forms will be submitted Friday, October 26th.  Usually books arrive within a week of being submitted.  Also, be sure to check out the class wish list to add to our classroom libraries.

We have our eighth spelling unit this week.  Any missed words will be on their spelling test on Thursday, November 1st.  Each student will need to have 20 spelling words from a list provided in class.  Every student has a copy of their list in their binder and a copy at school.  Also, students will add their lists to Seesaw this week so you have access to their spelling lists in multiple formats.  We will practice in class but please be working with your child during the week on their spelling.
The bonus word of the week is flabbergasted. It was missing on one side of the sheet.

Character Formation Story: Pharaoh Does Not Obey
Word of the Week: INTEGRITY - God's power for you to be true to Him and yourself.

Memory Verse: 1 Corinthians 15:58
58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

Focus Question: How can you do what God wants you to do when others tell you not to?

Art: Please see the amazing art work hanging in the hallway for all to enjoy!

Reading: Reading groups with teachers are going great!  We are working on reading comprehension and fluency.  You can see your child's work in their reading notebook behind the "Group Book" tab.  Sometimes your child will have an assignment that they will need to complete during the week.  Students should bring their reading notebook home to mark that they have spent time reading five out of seven nights for at least 20 minutes.  This weekend students will need a parent signature as part of a completion grade in reading.  There is a grading checklist your student has started in class, please help them use the checklist at home so they are ready to turn in notebooks on Monday.
Students are working on building their reading stamina. It is always helpful to talk about what they are reading at home.

Math: Students are encouraged to practice math facts at home, especially multiplication.  They should be able to say their multiplication facts as quickly as possible from memory.  Please work on these throughout the year.
Students will have investigation 2, lesson 21 and a test #3 this week on Thursday.

In class, students were given a specific username and password to an online math program that aligns perfectly with our math curriculum.  Please have your student login at home using a computer, tablet, or a cell phone.  You will be able to download the app from your app store for free.  The usernames and passwords are in your student's planner and were sent home on Friday.

In case students forget to bring home their math book, here is an online version.  If there are measuring questions they will need to use their math book to complete those questions.

Here is the video we used in class to help teach elapsed time.  I suggest watching it with your student again.

Social Studies: Students will read and discuss the life of Martin Luther and the history of the Reformation.

Science: Science will resume next week.
