Shaw Nature Reserve Field Trip for Maple Syrup Collecting - February 7th

Parents,

We are excited to go back to Shaw Nature Reserve for a science field trip to learn about photosynthesis and the process of collecting maple syrup.  Here are a few things you will need to know to get your child ready for the trip:

Prepare:

1.         Wear the right clothes and shoes: Wear clothing suitable for hiking in the outdoors.  Please, no shorts, dresses, sandals, or flip flops.  Long pants, socks and tennis shoes that can get muddy will be fine.  Jeans are acceptable with a CCLS polo.  Rain gear and boots for wet weather are recommended.  REMEMBER: it can often be as much as 10 degrees cooler at the Nature Reserve than in the city.  Please watch the forecast for Wednesday.

2. Chaperones: We request that all adults be on time, so that they may pay $3 and enter the Nature Reserve at the same time as the group.  If possible, adults not riding the bus are encouraged to carpool.  Chaperones need to arrive before the bus or with the bus.    Chaperones should be engaged in the program, focused on student learning, and following directions.  Chaperone behavior as an enthusiastic role model is very helpful in encouraging students’ full participation.

Note: If chaperones arrive late we can’t guarantee that they can meet up with their child’s group until lunch.

3.         Bug Spray: Ticks and chiggers commonly occur in Missouri from early spring throughout the fall.  Although the instructors avoid areas of high concentration, you may wish to spray students with an appropriate repellent from the knees down before your arrival.

4.         Lunch and Snacks: Since we often eat lunch later than students are used to, we suggest they bring a light snack (crackers, granola bars) to be eaten before the trip begins. We will eat lunch outdoors under a pavillion.  Please make sure to pack a home lunch and bring a drink or order a sack lunch from school.

Directions to Shaw Nature Reserve in Gray Summit:

Travel Details: Located 22 miles west of the I-44/I-270 junction.  Exit at Gray Summit, #253, which is two exits west of Six Flags.  From the exit ramp, turn left crossing over I-44.  Visitor Center entrance is 40 yards to the right of the Phillips 66 gas station and across the street from a commuter parking lot.  (Note: this is NOT the Missouri Botanical Garden, formerly called Shaw’s Garden, which is in St. Louis by Tower Grove Park.)
