News and Notes from 4th Grade September 10th-13th

Starting on a Tuesday had a different feel but the students adjusted by the end of the day.  This coming week is also another four day week.  Friday there is no school for students - teachers have a professional development conference to attend.  A set of graded papers was sent home with your child on Friday.  Please make sure to review and see how your child is doing with their school work.  We had an excellent four day week at school!

Scholastic Book Order Forms went home with your child's take home/graded papers this Friday.  Please place all orders online.  There is a link on the side of this blog.
Scholastic Book Order Forms will be submitted Friday, September 28th.  Usually books arrive within a week of being submitted.  Also, be sure to check out the class wishlists to add to our classroom libraries.

We started Spelling this week with a pretest on Thursday.  Any missed words will be on their spelling test on Thursday, September 13th.  Each student will need to have 20 spelling words from a list provided in class.  Mrs. Glackin's class should have their spelling words in their planners already, Mrs. Endorf's class will be doing this on Monday.  Every student has a copy of their list in their binder and a copy at school.  Also, we plan to have students add their lists to Seesaw this week so you have access to their spelling lists in multiple formats.  We will practice in class but please be working with your child during the week on their spelling.

Character Formation Story: God Promises Abraham a Son
Word of the Week: Integrity - God's power for you to be true to Him and yourself.

There will be no memory work this week.  We will discuss our story in class and work in our religion notebooks to illustrate and reflect on God's promises and how we can trust in Him even when we are not certain of his plan.  Mrs. Endorf will be collecting religion notebooks to check for participation with our notes in class.
Focus Question: How can you continue to do what is right even when you don't understand God's plan?

Art: Students are creating art work drawing from a one point perspective with their names. Art work is due on Thursday.

Reading: Our benchmark testing is coming to an end.  Students will be working in small groups and individually with teachers as we work on reading comprehension.  Students should start bringing home their reading notebooks to mark that they have spent time reading five out of seven nights for at least 20 minutes.  This weekend students will need a parent signature as part of a completion grade in reading.
Students are working on building their reading stamina.  They should bring one or more books from home to read during the school day.

Math: Students are encouraged to practice math facts at home, especially multiplication.  They should be able to say their multiplication facts as quickly as possible from memory.  Please work on these throughout the year.  Students are working on lessons 4-8 this week.  Their homework sheet is scaffold to help them understand the work goes in the work boxes and the answers are in the answer box.  I will have the answer boxes filled out for our first several lessons so they can focus on the work box and have a clear understanding of what it means to show work.

Social Studies: Students are expanding on mapping concepts they worked on in 3rd grade.  They will be focusing more on longitude and latitude this week.

Science: Students witnessed first hand if Superworms preferred hot vs a cold climate.  Many of them were so cold they could hardly move, thankfully all Superworms are still alive and happily living in a warmer climate.  We are awaiting the arrival of our next bug, the isopods for more observations and experiments.

Our first field trip is coming up on Wednesday, October 10th.  Parents are needed to form small groups of students to explore and learn about the pioneer days of Missouri's history.  Please email Mrs. Endorf if you are able to join us for the day.
