News and Notes from 4th Grade - September 24th-28th

This week was a great week!  Students (and teachers!) loved hearing from author, Barbra O'Connor, at the author visit this past Tuesday.  She had wonderful writing advice for students - "Show, Don't Tell" when writing a story.  We use this same idea when teaching students during writing time so it was nice for them to hear that same message from a published author too!

Scholastic Book Order Forms went home with your child, if you do not have an order form you are welcome to shop the catalogs online.  Please place all orders online.  There is a link on the side of this blog.
Scholastic Book Order Forms will be submitted Friday, September 28th.  Usually books arrive within a week of being submitted.  Also, be sure to check out the class wish list to add to our classroom libraries.

We have our third spelling unit this week.  Any missed words will be on their spelling test on Thursday, September 27th.  Each student will need to have 20 spelling words from a list provided in class.  Every student has a copy of their list in their binder and a copy at school.  Also, students will add their lists to Seesaw this week so you have access to their spelling lists in multiple formats.  We will practice in class but please be working with your child during the week on their spelling.

Character Formation Story: Jacob Wrestles with God
Word of the Week: Courage - God's power for you to overcome fear.

Memory Verse: Deuteronomy 31:6
Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”

Focus Question: How does trusting God give you courage to face the fears with which you are wrestling with?

Art: Students are continuing to learn about Pablo Picasso and creating their won work inspired by his art.

Reading: Students will be working in small groups and individually with teachers as we work on reading comprehension and fluency.  Students should start bringing home their reading notebooks to mark that they have spent time reading five out of seven nights for at least 20 minutes.  This weekend students will need a parent signature as part of a completion grade in reading.  There is a grading checklist your student has started in class, please help them use the checklist at home so they are ready to turn in notebooks on Monday.
Students are working on building their reading stamina. It is always helpful to talk about what they are reading at home.

Math: Students are encouraged to practice math facts at home, especially multiplication.  They should be able to say their multiplication facts as quickly as possible from memory.  Please work on these throughout the year.
Students will have their first math assessment on Monday.  They have a review that we worked on in class, please help them study at home too.  Then we will work on number lines and continue on with the next lesson.

Social Studies: Students will be finishing up map skills this week.  Study guide should come home by the end of the week.  Students will have a social studies test around the first week of October.

Science: We have introduced fish to the classroom.  Students did a few observations and have been discussing food chains and food webs. Isopods should be arriving any day!

Our first field trip is coming up on Wednesday, October 10th.  Parents are needed to form small groups of students to explore and learn about the pioneer days of Missouri's history.  Please email Mrs. Endorf if you are able to join us for the day.
