News and Notes from 4th Grade - September 17th-21st

We hope you enjoyed the three day weekend with your kids; now back to five day school weeks. Teachers were able to focus on learning about anxiety and trauma in today's children.

Scholastic Book Order Forms went home with your child, if you do not have an order form you are welcome to shop the catalogs online.  Please place all orders online.  There is a link on the side of this blog.
Scholastic Book Order Forms will be submitted Friday, September 28th.  Usually books arrive within a week of being submitted.  Also, be sure to check out the class wish list to add to our classroom libraries.

We have our second spelling unit this week.  Any missed words will be on their spelling test on Thursday, September 20th.  Each student will need to have 20 spelling words from a list provided in class.  Every student has a copy of their list in their binder and a copy at school.  Also, students will add their lists to Seesaw this week so you have access to their spelling lists in multiple formats.  We will practice in class but please be working with your child during the week on their spelling.

Character Formation Story: Abraham Willing to Sacrifice Issac
Word of the Week: Self-Sacrifice: God's power for you to give up something to help others.

Memory Verse: Mark 8:34 34 And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

Focus Question: How can you give up something that matters most to you?

Art: One-point perspective art work was excellent.  Please take a look in the hallway at some of the beautiful artwork students have completed so far this year.  The next project is Pablo Picasso inspired self portraits with watercolors.

Reading: Students will be working in small groups and individually with teachers as we work on reading comprehension.  Students should start bringing home their reading notebooks to mark that they have spent time reading five out of seven nights for at least 20 minutes.  This weekend students will need a parent signature as part of a completion grade in reading.  There is a grading checklist your student has started in class, please help them use the checklist at home so they are ready to turn in notebooks on Monday.
Students are working on building their reading stamina.  They should bring one or more books from home to read during the school day.

Math: Students are encouraged to practice math facts at home, especially multiplication.  They should be able to say their multiplication facts as quickly as possible from memory.  Please work on these throughout the year.  Students are working on lessons 9-11 and a test this week.  Their homework sheet is scaffold to help them understand the work goes in the work boxes and the answers are in the answer box.  I will have the answer boxes filled out for our first several lessons so they can focus on the work box and have a clear understanding of what it means to show work.

Social Studies: Students are expanding on mapping concepts they worked on in 3rd grade.  They will be focusing more on longitude and latitude.  We are very please with how they are picking up the mapping skills.  Next up is regional maps and special-purpose maps.

Science: Students witnessed first hand if Superworms preferred light vs dark climate or if they would like water vs dry land.  We are awaiting the arrival of our next bug, the isopods for more observations and experiments. If isopods do not arrive soon we will be starting aquatic environments.

Our first field trip is coming up on Wednesday, October 10th.  Parents are needed to form small groups of students to explore and learn about the pioneer days of Missouri's history.  Please email Mrs. Endorf if you are able to join us for the day.
